Akiyoshido Cave

Walking through Akiyoshidō Cave is like stepping into a vast underground realm shaped by ancient forces. Beneath the sweeping karst fields of the Akiyoshidai Plateau lies Japan’s longest limestone cave system, stretching more than 10 kilometers though only about 1 kilometer is open for visitors. As you enter, the cool air settles in around a steady 17 °C, offering a refreshing escape in summer and a surprisingly mild sanctuary in winter.

The entrance itself is dramatic with towering dimensions around 24 m high and 8 m wide leading into grand chambers that swell to 80 m at their highest point and spread as wide as 200 m. Once inside, the illuminated path reveals an array of awe‑inspiring features. The iconic Golden Pillar, a limestone column rising roughly 15 m tall, appears majestic as it’s formed by countless mineral deposits over centuries. Nearby the layered “Hundred Plates,” locally called Hyakumai‑zara, resemble natural stone terraces, shimmering softly under the lights.

Every stalactite, stalagmite, and column feels like a living sculpture carved by time. Some trail the cave floor alongside clear streams that mirror the formations above. For those seeking something more hands‑on, the Adventure Course lets you climb ladders and squeeze through narrow fissures guided only by flashlight. It’s brief but satisfying and thrilling enough to feel like true spelunking.

At around 700 m along the route there’s an elevator that carries you gently up to the plateau level. From the observation deck above you catch sweeping views of the Akiyoshidai karst landscape, a sea of grass-speckled limestone pinnacles and dolines formed hundreds of millions of years ago.

Throughout the visit there is a sense of reverence. Hundreds of millions of years of geology converge here in a space designated a Special Natural Monument. Light reveals shape after shape in a carefully maintained environment where the paths guide you but never interrupt the natural wonder.
