Hananuki Gorge [花貫渓谷] is a forested ravine in Takahagi City, Ibaraki Prefecture, known for its 60-meter wooden suspension bridge that spans high above the Hananuki River. Often called the Shiomi Falls Suspension Bridge, it serves as the scenic centerpiece of the gorge, drawing hikers, photographers, and nature lovers year-round. The views from the bridge—especially during peak autumn or spring foliage—are some of the most picturesque in the region.

The surrounding area is part of the Hanazono-Hananuki Prefectural Natural Park, home to rich woodlands composed of oak, maple, and chestnut trees. Trails weave through this diverse forest, guiding visitors past Shiomi Falls, Otome Falls, and Fudo Falls—each offering a slightly different experience depending on the season. The valley air is especially crisp, and local signage even mentions the presence of “negative ions” believed to enhance well-being.

Autumn is the gorge’s signature season. From early to mid-November, the area turns into a brilliant tunnel of red, orange, and gold. The Momiji Festival often includes evening illuminations along the bridge and river path, creating a glowing canopy after dark. In contrast, spring brings soft greenery and fresh mountain air, while summer invites visitors to cool off in natural pools or pitch a tent at nearby Kotakizawa campground, which offers both structured and free camping options.

The trails vary in difficulty but are generally beginner-friendly, with occasional steep or slippery sections, particularly after rain. From the main parking lot, it’s about an 800-meter walk to reach the suspension bridge. While the area is open 24 hours, it’s best visited during daylight. Bring good walking shoes, insect repellent in summer, and a flashlight if staying past sunset. There’s minimal lighting and signage, though maps are often posted near trailheads and rest areas.

For photographers, morning light filters gently through the trees and mist, especially from the eastern side of the bridge. In autumn, late afternoon light brings out the deepest reds. Tripods are generally permitted but can be tricky to set up when the bridge is crowded or windy. For panoramic shots, some trails near the Hananuki Dam also offer wider valley views with sea glimpses on clear days.
