About this place📍

Manjiro Ashiyu Footbath

You step into a modest, modern building near Cape Ashizuri, and the first thing you notice is the view: floor to ceiling windows frame the vast Pacific Ocean and the massive Hakusan Natural Arch, one of Japan’s largest granite sea caves. The footbath is terraced, with space for about 30 people, so everyone gets a front-row seat to the coastal panorama.

The water comes from Ashizuri hot spring, said to have soothed weary bodies since the time of Kūkai [空海] more than 1,200 years ago. Some say it carries a hint of radon-rich cold spring, but it feels gently warm. Locals and pilgrims alike appreciate its soothing effect after long walks on the Shikoku 88‑temple route.

Light wood, clean lines, and large windows give the space a quiet elegance. Benches beside the bath let you rest without soaking your feet, making it easy to just enjoy the breeze and view. Vending machines and restrooms are available, making it a practical place to take a break before or after exploring.

In colder months or after a windy cliffside stroll, the warmth of the water feels especially comforting. Even in winter, the free access and peaceful scenery make this a favorite stop along the Ashizuri Peninsula. Towels are sold on-site for 100 yen, but bringing your own is more convenient.
