About this place📍

Nakamura Keith Haring Collection

The Nakamura Keith Haring Collection stands as the world's only museum dedicated to the iconic artist, housing an impressive collection of approximately 300 works. The modern architectural design creates a perfect backdrop for Haring's vibrant, politically charged artwork, seamlessly blending contemporary art with the serene natural surroundings of Yatsugatake.

Even if Keith Haring's name doesn't immediately ring a bell, his kinetic street art has undoubtedly crossed your path on shirts, Swatches, and stickers globally. Although his popularity declined in the West after his death in the early 1990s, Haring's socially conscious and positive art continues to have a significant following in Japan. Despite Yamanashi's growing reputation as a cultural hub for galleries and museums, it's still surprising to discover a dedicated space showcasing an extensive private collection of Haring's work.

Atsushi Kitagawara, the award-winning architect, designed the stunning building that houses the collection. The displays vary from being bathed in natural light to pitch-black settings with individual artworks highlighted by spotlights. Outside, the buildings feature bold colors and a blend of sharp and curved lines. The museum won the Yamanashi Cultural Prize of Architecture in 2007 and in 2010, it won the Japan Art Academy Prize.

Visitors can explore three distinct exhibition areas that chronicle Haring's artistic journey, social activism, and deep connection to Japan. The museum's thoughtful curation provides comprehensive insights into his messages of peace, love, and social justice, while smartphone photography is permitted throughout the galleries, allowing guests to capture their experience.

The museum experience culminates in a well-stocked shop featuring exclusive Keith Haring merchandise, from t-shirts to unique accessories. The facility is fully accessible, with wheelchair-friendly entrances, parking, and restrooms, demonstrating a commitment to inclusivity that aligns with Haring's own values.
