Roppongi Keyakizaka Dori is a celebrated urban promenade stretching approximately 400 meters through the heart of the Roppongi Hills district in Minato City, Tokyo. Established in 2003 as part of the ambitious redevelopment of Roppongi 6-chome, this avenue was designed to harmonize nature, luxury, and contemporary art within one of Tokyo’s most sophisticated urban environments. Linking the major thoroughfares of Kanjo-sango (環状三号線) and TV Asahi Dori (テレビ朝日通り), it serves as both the main artery of Roppongi Hills and a symbol of modern Tokyo’s cosmopolitan flair.

Historically, the land beneath Keyakizaka Dori was a dense residential area known for its sloped terrain and narrow alleys. During the Edo period, the neighborhood was prized for its abundant spring water, which supported a once-thriving goldfish farming industry. Today, the avenue’s gentle incline is flanked by neatly pruned zelkova trees (keyaki [欅]), seasonal flowerbeds, and modern public art pieces known as “street furniture”—functional sculptures that double as benches. In a subtle tribute to local heritage, six camphor trees (kusunoki [クスノキ]) have been planted to echo the “roku” (six) in Roppongi and help buffer wind tunnels created by surrounding towers.

Luxury boutiques like Louis Vuitton and Burberry line the street alongside acclaimed restaurants and sleek cafés, making it a favored destination for high-end shopping and relaxed urban strolls. The cultural presence is equally strong, with nearby art museums, landscaped plazas, and public sculptures adding texture to the refined cityscape. Visitors often note the avenue’s elegant rhythm—where the natural canopy and curated plantings soften the geometry of modern architecture.

The avenue’s most iconic transformation occurs in winter, when the Keyakizaka Illumination bathes the street in a dazzling display of nearly 800,000 LED lights. From early November to late December, the trees glow in a “SNOW & BLUE” palette, turning the street into a radiant tunnel of white and icy blue light. The view of Tokyo Tower framed by the illuminated zelkova trees is particularly famous, drawing both photographers and sightseers. Crowd management staff are present during peak hours to ensure a smooth and safe experience.

For photographers, two vantage points are especially popular: the pedestrian bridge, offering an elevated and symmetrical view with Tokyo Tower in the distance; and the base of the slope, where the street’s curvature and converging lights create a dynamic urban composition. The best photographs are often captured during the blue hour, when the lights shimmer against the twilight sky. Tripods are generally discouraged during busy periods, so handheld setups and high ISO settings are advised. Even outside illumination season, the avenue remains photogenic year-round thanks to its graceful curves and interplay of greenery and cityscape.
