About this place📍

Gyokusendo Cave

Gyokusendō Cave invites you into a secret world carved over some 300,000 years. Nestled beneath the Okinawa World theme park in Nanjo, this immense limestone labyrinth spans roughly 5 km, yet only about 850-890 m is open for strolling along a gentle steel walkway. As soon as you step in, the air drops to a cool 21°C and humidity rises to about 80%, making every breath feel fresh and grounding after Okinawa’s tropical warmth.

Walking through feels like entering a fairy tale realm. Soft, purposeful lighting brings out the otherworldly shapes, stalactites, stalagmites, curtains of mineral cascading like frozen waterfalls, and stone pillars both delicate and towering. It is easy to stop mid step and just soak it in.

One of the most enchanting sights is the “Blue Spring” where crystal clear underground pools mirror the cave’s lighting, turning the surface into shimmering mirrors of blue. You may catch your reflection along with the glow, which feels a bit like discovering your own secret passage to another world.

Then there is the Grand Hall, a vast underground chamber about 20 m wide and 80 m deep, lined with two meter high stalagmites. You might even spot fossilized deer bones from the Ryukyu deer that once roamed here tens of thousands of years ago.

The pathway is thoughtfully built, safe with railings and occasional benches, but the cave still breathes. You will hear the gentle drip of mineral rich water, follow underground streams, and notice the slickness underfoot from the humid air.

At the end, you do not climb, you glide out on an escalator, which almost feels like being carried back to the world above with a wink.

Visiting notes🧳

Before you go

Wear comfortable, grippy shoes, the walkway through Gyokusendō Cave is smooth but can feel a bit slick from humidity and natural moisture. Tripods and selfie sticks aren’t allowed, but small cameras and phones work just fine with the cave’s thoughtful lighting. Admission to the cave comes as part of the Okinawa World theme park entry: it’s around 2,000 yen for adults and around 1,000 yen for children. Take your time soaking in the underground scenes, then glide gently back to the surface via the escalator, it always feels a bit magical to exit that way.

Holiday timings
