About this place📍

Mount Daibosatsu

Mount Daibosatsu stands at 2,057 meters as one of Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains, offering an exceptionally accessible alpine experience from its Kamihikawa Pass trailhead starting at approximately 1,585 meters elevation. This beginner-friendly peak features well-maintained trails that traverse beautiful larch forests before opening onto spectacular ridgelines with panoramic views of Mount Fuji, the Southern Alps, and the Kofu Basin. The true highlight lies not at the tree-enclosed summit, but along the magnificent ridge walk from Daibosatsu Pass to Raiwa Rock, where hikers experience an unparalleled sense of openness across bamboo grass meadows.

The relatively short hiking time of 3 to 4 hours for the classic clockwise loop makes this an ideal day trip from Tokyo, accessible within two hours by car via the Chuo Expressway. Multiple mountain huts including Fukuchan-so, Lodge Chobei, and Kaisanso provide rest stops, refreshments, and facilities along the route, with some offering camping opportunities for overnight stays. The Karamatsu Ridge route presents steeper, rockier terrain, while the Daibosatsu Pass approach offers gentler gradients, allowing hikers to choose their preferred challenge level.

Wildlife encounters, including deer herds near Raiwa Rock, add to the mountain’s natural appeal, while autumn brings stunning foliage, typically peaking from mid to late October. Despite the high elevation, the lack of technical climbing sections makes Mount Daibosatsu suitable even for families with children, though proper hiking boots and layered clothing are essential given the exposed ridgeline conditions and potential for strong winds.

Seasonal Highlights

  1. Spring: Fresh greenery gradually replaces the snow, with clear mountain air and excellent views before the summer haze arrives.
  2. Summer: Comfortable temperatures make it one of the most popular beginner-friendly alpine hikes, with lush bamboo grass and expansive ridgeline scenery.
  3. Autumn: Mid to late October brings vibrant autumn foliage, especially around Kamihikawa Pass and the surrounding forests, combined with crisp views of Mount Fuji.
  4. Winter: Possible for experienced, properly equipped winter hikers. Snow-covered ridges and exceptionally clear Mount Fuji views are rewarding, but icy trails, strong winds, and possible road closures make it unsuitable for beginners.
Visiting notes🧳

Before you go

There is no entry fee to hike Mount Daibosatsu. The most popular starting point is Kamihikawa Pass, where paid parking is available during the hiking season. Wear proper hiking boots and bring layered clothing, as temperatures can be much cooler than in the lowlands and strong winds are common along the ridgeline. Toilets are available at the trailhead and mountain huts, while drinks and light meals can be purchased at some huts during operating periods. English signage is limited but the main trails are well marked. Tripods are generally permitted for personal photography as long as they do not obstruct other hikers. Carry sufficient water and check weather conditions before setting out.

Holiday timings

Open year-round, although access to Kamihikawa Pass may be restricted by snow or road closures in winter. Mountain huts generally operate from spring through autumn, with schedules varying by facility. There are no fixed closing days for the mountain itself.

When to go

Mount Daibosatsu offers spectacular scenery year-round, with autumn foliage in November being particularly stunning and fresh greenery creating beautiful landscapes in spring and early summer. Weekday visits outside peak autumn season offer less crowded trails and parking availability, while weekend mornings require arrival before 6 AM to secure parking spots. The temperature at the 2,057-meter summit remains refreshingly cool even in midsummer, making it an excellent escape from Tokyo's heat with temperatures around 18°C.
