About this place📍

Shikisai-no-oka Flower Garden

Shikisai-no-oka unfolds across about 15 hectares of gently rolling hills in Biei, each slope turned into a living canvas as dozens of seasonal blooms like tulips, poppies, lavender, salvia, sunflowers, marigolds and more rise and fall across spring through autumn. The way these flowers are planted in sweeping ribbons and gradients creates a mosaic of color so lush it feels painted across the landscape. From whatever angle or season you encounter them, those blooms seem to shift and dance.

Getting around the gardens is part of the charm, not just convenience. The slow-rolling Norokko tractor bus gently meanders through flower-rich corridors, pausing for photos framed by vivid blossoms and distant mountain ranges like the Daisetsuzan. If you’re feeling more adventurous, there is a 1 km buggy circuit and 15-minute four-person carts, both popular ways to feel a bit of wind in your hair while admiring the floral tapestries.

The alpaca farm, open year-round, brings a softer, cozier note to the vibrant scene. You can get delightfully close to these fluffy mascots, visiting them at leisure or even feeding them. Their gentle presence adds a warm, unexpected joy amid the blooms.

Scattered across the grounds, shops and eateries offer seasonal snacks and local products such as lavender soft-serve, hearty vegetable soup curry, fresh melon treats, croquettes made from garden-grown potatoes, and even curry udon from local wheat.

Shikisai-no-oka is also thoughtfully equipped: accessible restrooms, wheelchair-friendly paths, parking for hundreds of cars and space for buses, indoor dining, vending machines, and souvenir stalls make it easy to stay and enjoy without fuss. Whether you are gazing across multicolored fields in quiet appreciation or chasing sunbeams in a buggy, the experience feels both grand and comfortably close.

When to go

The garden reaches peak beauty from mid-July through early August when lavender and summer blooms create stunning panoramic displays. The flowers change seasonally, with different varieties blooming from June through October, offering unique views throughout the growing season. Early morning visits before 10 AM provide the best experience with fewer crowds and optimal lighting for photography. Consider planning your visit on weekdays, particularly Thursdays, when visitor numbers are typically lower than other days. Public review summary

Visitors appreciate the vibrant flower displays and scenic hillside views, particularly during peak bloom seasons. The tractor rides and golf carts receive positive feedback for offering unique perspectives, though some note these extra costs add up. While many praise the meticulously maintained gardens and peaceful atmosphere, others mention summer crowds and heat can impact the experience. The alpaca area adds charm but feels commercialized to some. Morning visits tend to generate more favorable reviews than midday stops.
