About this place📍

Yokosuka Museum of Art

The Yokosuka Museum of Art offers a striking architectural experience, with its glass-clad structure providing stunning views across Tokyo Bay. The building itself, designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Riken Yamamoto, seamlessly integrates with its coastal setting through innovative use of natural light and expansive windows. The architecture truly is a statement here and nature is part of the exhibit.

Beside modern galleries you’ll find the Taniuchi Rokuro Pavilion, a cozy annex dedicated to the nostalgic, Showa‑era magazine covers by local artist Rokuro Taniuchi. It includes over 1,300 illustrations and casts a warm, reflective glow over visitors. Travelers recount the pavilion’s charm with statements like “charmed me with their innocence” and “a lovely new spacious building on the coast,” echoing how art and setting intertwine.

Outside, the “Umi no Hiroba” lawn plaza offers open‑air sculptures, occasional outdoor movie screenings, and hydrangea‑lined walkways that burst into rainbow hues each June, creating a peaceful promenade against the backdrop of verdant hills and Tokyo Bay. The hillside paths, adorned in pinks, blues, purples and whites, reach their peak mid‑June, framing the bay in a quiet floral spectacle.

Up on the rooftop terrace, you can linger without even needing a museum ticket: it’s open from 9 AM till around 7 PM. It’s a favorite for sunset and stargazing, offering an unbroken view over the Uraga Channel where naval and commercial vessels pass. Some say this plaza defines art, nature, and maritime life converging into one experience.

And just beneath that terrace, the on‑site Italian restaurant, ACQUAMARE, helmed by Yoshimi Hidaka of Acqua Pazza fame, brings seasonal, locally inspired dishes to waterfront tables. It’s highly rated, but at busy times a reservation ensures you don’t miss a view‑seat.
